Complete libretto to the 1862 operetta. When it was first produced in Boston in 1862, "The Doctor of Alcantara" was immediately popular and created great enthusiasm with audiences. Considered one of the very early American musicals, it closely followed the patterns of musical theatre with songs integrated into a plot which revolved around arranged marriages, disguised lovers, and murder. It had its New York premiere at the New York Theatre, October 3, 1866 again to an enthusiastic reception. The musical remained popular throughout the 19th century and was regularly revived. Published as part of Theatre Arts Press' Historical Libretto Series.
