Without Fear: A Soldier’s Memoir of Sacrifice, Love, Tragedy, and Triumph in Central Iraq

You turn on the television. There is a military recruiting commercial on. It is glorious. There are men HALO jumping out of airplanes, rappelling from UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters, sniping with a Barrett M107 rifle from a hidden forest blind, or scuba diving next to an enemy mine. Though these are all things that people in the military do indeed do, few partake in these activities and the ones that do don't do them all that often. What happens the rest of the time? What is a modern deployment really like? The combat arms soldiers have lots of support. Walter Rosado was a soldier in an S-1/Human Resources section who began keeping a journal the day he learned that he would be deploying with the world's only reserve component Army Infantry Stryker Brigade to Central Iraq during a time of war and reconstruction. The diary quickly grew to hundreds of pages of notes and photographs- the basis for the book entitled Without Fear. Without Fear is an original and honest memoir that follows a support soldier through his training, deployment to the Middle East, and return home. It focuses on the 2009 deployment of Headquarters Company, 1-112th Infantry Regiment, 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 28th Infantry Division Mechanized.

Dr. Walter L. Rosado is the author of Without Fear and a decorated U.S. Army combat veteran of overseas military operations under the Global War on Terrorism to include the Iraq Campaign. His military awards include the Army Combat Action Badge and the Army Commendation Medal. Dr. Rosado currently works as a change management consultant for a major healthcare technologies firm. He holds a Ph.D. from Robert Morris University, a M.S. from Duquesne University, and a B.A. from Thiel College. He resides at his home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
