Lisl Steiner was born in Vienna in 1927. In 1938 she and her family fled from the Nazis to Argentina. Her alma mater is the university of Buenos Aires, where she studied art. She then started to work in the Argentinian film industry and was involved in the making of 50 documentaries. Her career as a photographer began with a portrait of the Argentinian president, Pedro Eugenio Aramburu, published in Life magazine. In the early 1970s she and her psychiatrist husband, Michael Meyer Monchek, moved to Pound Ridge, where she still lives.
