Handbook of Historical Studies in Education: Debates, Tensions, and Directions

This book offers an in‐depth historiographical and comparative analysis of prominent theoretical and methodological debates in the field. Across each of the sections, contributors will draw on specific case studies to illustrate the origins, debates and tensions in the field and overview new trends, directions and developments. Each section includes an introduction that provides an overview of the theme and the overall emphasis within the section. In addition, each section has a concluding chapter that offers a critical and comparative analysis of the national case studies presented. As a Handbook, the emphasis is on deeper consideration of key issues rather than a more superficial and broader sweep. The book offers researchers, postgraduate and higher degree students as well as those teaching in this field a definitive text that identifies and debates key historiographical and methodological issues. The intent is to encourage comparative historiographical perspectives of the nominated issues that overview the main theoretical and methodological debates and to propose new directions for the field.

Tanya Fitzgerald has an extensive record of leadership, research and teaching in universities in New Zealand, England, and Australia. She holds visiting professor roles at universities in South Africa, Malaysia and North America. Tanya’s research interests span the of history of women’s higher education, and higher education policy and leadership. Recent publications include a major reference work International Handbook of Historical Studies in Education (Springer, 2020) Historical Perspectives on Teacher Preparation in Aotearoa New Zealand (with Sally Knipe, Emerald, 2019). Tanya is currently working on a history of scholarly women, academic diplomacy and the International Federation of University Women. Tanya serves on a number of international editorial boards and has been editor of History of Education Review (2002-2012) and Journal of Educational Administration and History (2007-2017, with Helen M Gunter, University of Manchester). Forthcoming guest editorships include Pedagogica Historica (with Simonetta Polenghi, Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milan) and Irish Educational Studies (with Judith Harford, University College, Dublin and Pat O’Connor, University of Limerick). In addition, she is Series Editor of Perspectives on Leadership in Higher Education (Bloomsbury Academic, with Jon Nixon and Helen M Gunter). In July 2019 Tanya takes up the position of Professor of Higher Education and Dean of the Graduate School of Education at the University of Western Australia.
